Video | Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is one of the longest running musicals in history. In its 33rd year, it had finally arrived in Dubai. Initially, I thought that the ticket was almost as expensive as Broadway (if not more) so I thought, with a heavy heart, I'd pass for now and try to secure a Broadway ticket soon. But thank God for friends and former colleagues, I got two (2) discounted tickets!

The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical has made the classic soundtrack, which includes “The Music of the Night”, “All I Ask of You”, “Think of Me”, and “The Phantom of the Opera”. I've listened to these songs growing up, and watching the 2004 movie (Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum & Patrick Wilson) and video clips of performances. However, it is really different when you're in an Opera House and experiencing first-hand high-caliber talents of actors singing, dancing and acting in over 300 amazing period costumes on a beautifully-crafted, high-tech stage.

Jonathan Roxmouth, who brilliantly played the Phantom, said in an interview that the Dubai Opera stage had the fastest movement of the huge chandelier, which is an integral part of the whole production. Seeing that fast movement gave me goosebumps. It's quite wonderful how the latest advancements in technology are further shaping the beauty of an old musical and giving new and older generations a brand new experience.

Here's an excerpt from Whats On AE:

"The show tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House, before becoming enraptured by the talents of a young soprano, Christine. Having lured her in as his protégé – and into his underground lair – the phantom falls madly in love, then descends into jealous madness upon learning of Christine’s love affair with the opera’s patron, Raoul."

The show in Dubai, which was from the 16th of October to the 9th of November brought wonderful performances by Matt Leisy (Raoul de Chagny), Claire Lyon (Christine Daaé) and Jonathan Roxmouth (the Phantom). It's unbelievable how they and the entire ensemble can dance, sing and act like that especially that they had several two-show days! Christine's and the Phantom's tears and the high notes blew me away! I'm convinced these folks are mutants! LOL

Thank you, POTO World Tour Company! Happy trails!

This experience is definitely tiding me over until my next Broadway experience or my first West End experience soon.

What musical are you dying to see?

Love always,
