My Favorite Breakfasts at Home

One of the things that has changed in me growing older is the love for breakfast. I used to not like the idea of waking up early to make and have breakfast and go to school or work. I used to skip it and that's partly why I've been having stomach problems since my early 20s. Thankfully, in the last couple of years, I have been enjoying making and having breakfasts.

I've been trying to find good breakfast options that I (or anyone) can make at home without having to spend too much time or effort. So, here are my favorite breakfasts these days at home.

Oats + Fruits and Berries

My mother loves oats. As a kid, a tin can of Quaker Oats was one of the things we always had in our cupboard. Lately, I find I reach for porridge oats more often than any other breakfast options I've listed here. I think it has to do with the fact that most fruits and berries are readily available here in Dubai and are oftentimes more affordable than back home. Plus, I've mastered the perfect ratio for my taste: 1 cup fresh or soy milk, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup oats, & 2 tbsp chia seeds. Heat in a small sauce pan.

If I have work the next day, I can make it just before I go to bed, take it to work in the morning, reheat and have a hearty breakfast at my desk.


Pancakes and waffles will always be part of anyone's favorite breakfast list whether it's plain or wholemeal with/without chocolate chips (or any other good flour-fruit-nut combo), topped with fruits & berries, whipped cream & butter, maple syrup, honey or agave.

Bacon & Eggs

No breakfast spread will ever be without these two. Sunny side up, Spanish omelette / scrambled eggs, Japanese omurice, hard or soft boiled, or frittata style, eggs will always be a good breakfast option along with crispy fried bacon. If I'm feeling a bit fancy when putting these two together, I'll bake Martha Stewart's bacon, eggs & toast cup.


I understand that traditionally scones are enjoyed during afternoon tea. But food is food; and you can eat it whenever you like especially if you made them yourself. Lately, I've been baking some scones for breakfast, because it's easy to make from scratch, kneading isn't needed, and it smells so good while baking and eating hot and fresh out of the oven -- it wakes you up.

Avocado Toasts

I fell in love with avocado toasts in Melbourne when I was there for the first time. Literally everywhere I got my morning coffee, the cafes would offer avocado slices or mashed avocado on toasts with chili flakes on the menu. I tried it and I found out why it's a cult favorite.

It is also very easy to make at home. It's practically breakfast in a flash: avocado + toast + chilli flakes + a bit of salt & pepper

Puff Pastry

The easiest way to bake your own Danish pastry or single-serve pie for breakfast is simply having store-bought puff pastry all the time. And there's no shame in that at all. Even celebrity chefs admit to having store-bought puff pastry in the fridge just in case.

Dried Fish

Not a lot of non-Filipinos or non-Asians would understand fried fish. It's too salty and extremely stinky especially during cooking. But I grew up having them regularly (more than I probably should); it's practically in my blood. That's why fried dried fish, eggs and rice will always be in my breakfast list perhaps until the day I die. LOL

Fruits & Citrus Juice

Let's not forget it's always good to be a fruit ninja as soon as you start your day.

So you see, I love breakfasts now. And that is always a good thing.
